I knew about this place from some magazine I read in a cafe one morning. A donkey sanctuary – sounds interesting, especially that I had never seen a donkey in my life before…
The donkeys are as cute as I thought, although some of them were actually bigger than I thought,
I learned quite a bit of donkeys, and the difference between mules and hinnies. Yeah, although they are called The Donkey Sanctuary, they also have some mules and hinnies, and also two goats.
The place was much bigger than I expected. There are several areas where you can see (and brush) the donkeys. The staff and volunteers were there to answer questions and tell interesting stories about the donkeys. They have an impressive large open areas.
On the side of the main area, there is a picnic area overlooking a nice pond. They don’t sell any food, so you’d better bring your own to enjoy
There were several hiking trails you can straddle around. I took one near the pond, and it was well groomed and pretty short. I wish I had come earlier so I can try the other trails as well.
The place is in Punslinch, near Guelph, ON, about an hour from Toronto. They only open on Sundays, plus on Wednesdays during summer time. Admission is free, with some donation suggested.
It was a really nice visit, a real sanctuary.
